With so many different vape juice products on the market, and lots of conflicting information about product safety, it can be hard to know what to expect. Here, we break down some of the key ingredients you should be looking for in a quality vape, as well as what to avoid:
1. Propylene Glycol (PG)
The name may sound scary, but the ingredient is anything but. Propylene Glycol is certified safe by authorities, and is commonly used in food products to carry and enhance flavour. It’s non-toxic to ingest or inhale.
2. Vegetable Glycerin (VG)
Usually, vegetable Glycerin will be blended with Propylene Glycol to create a smooth, high quality e-liquid. As the name suggest, it’s a non-toxic vegetable-based odourless and colourless liquid commonly used in food items and cosmetics.
You should look for water in your vape products to make sure it’s NOT there.
Some unscrupulous vape manufacturers add water to their products to increase yield and therefore product. However, this leads to a poor vaping experience and often has uncomfortable side effects.
Flavouring is common in e-liquids, as it gives the range of different scents and tastes that vapers love. It’s also one of the most variable ingredients, with the most potential for harm.
One of the biggest problems about flavourings is that often all that’s required to meet manufacturing standards is to write “flavouring” on the label. This doesn’t help you choose a safe e-liquid from a bad one!
Using approved extracts to make flavours goes a long way toward keeping flavours safe.
Again, like the water above you should look for Diketones to avoid them, because you don’t want them in your vape products. Diketones are an additive used to create buttery or creamy flavouring that are often popular in e-liquids. Research has found it to have adverse side-effects for vapers.
To make matters more difficult, you often won’t find the word “Diketone” on the label, as it’s the name for a large chemical group. The most common Diketones are Diacetyl, Acetyl Propionyl and Acetoin. Look for those words and if you see them, don’t vape!
