New study reveals more people are quitting smoking thanks to vaping

The CDC recently released a study showing that more people in the USA are using vaping to help them quit smoking than patches, gum, and other FDA-approved methods.

To conduct the research, more than 15,000 subjects were surveyed online from 2014-2016 about their attempts to quit smoking prior to the survey. More than three-quarters of respondents used more than one method to help them quit.

The results showed that of all respondents, 35.3% attempted to cut down using e-cigarettes, and 24.7% attempted to switch completely to vaping. This was compared to nicotine patches or gum (25.4%), switching to “mild” cigarettes (20.4%), seeking help from a doctor or other professional (15%), medication (12.2%), stop-smoking websites (7.1%), and phoning a quitline (5.4%).

This means that over a third of smokers are using vaping as part of their quitting regime, and is over three times as popular as the FDA approved medications.

Clearly, despite many attempts by the CDC and other public health campaigns trying to discourage smokers from using e-cigarettes, vaping is becoming one of the most popular methods to help smokers quit. No matter the scare tactics some campaigns use; the research suggests that smokers want to vape, and vaping helps them quit. There’s no sense in trying to force people to quit a certain way if they find another method works better for them.

But do they actually quit?

It doesn’t matter how many smokers choose a certain method – if it doesn’t work, then it’s pointless. Luckily, we know vaping isn’t pointless. Initial studies – such as this one from the The Royal College of Physicians report – suggest that vaping combined with support from a stop-smoking service is as effective as medication (15% of smokers attempting to quit using vaping will succeed). And with the survey suggesting more people choose to use vaping than medication, this is certainly a positive indication that vaping is effective at helping more smokers to quit or cut back.

If you’re trying to quit smoking, the more resources you have at your disposal, the more likely you are to succeed. Vaping is a great tool to use to help you quit, because it mimics the habits you’ve formed during from smoking and gives you something to do with your hands.
