Why You Can’t Use High VG Vape Liquid in a Pod System

Many people see the 60ml bottles of high VG vape juice at its low price and think “wow, what a steal!”, and it is—but only if you’re using the right device! These liquids are designed for sub-ohm vaping and don’t work well with pod systems, but why? We break it down below.

What’s the Difference Between High VG & PG Liquids?

Before we get into using the appropriate liquid for your device, we need to break down the lingo. Pod device coils are usually used with high PG (Propylene Glycol), made with nicotine salt to deliver higher levels of nicotine, with a tight draw and smooth throat hit, carrying flavour like no other. This makes high PG liquids (and the small pod devices that are designed for them) ideal for people looking to quit smoking, delivering a similar experience to traditional cigarettes.

High VG (Vegetable Glycerin) liquids are designed for sub-ohm vaping, made with freebase nicotine. These liquids are made for direct-to-lung vaping, delivering a harsher throat hit that really hits the spot. These liquids generally make the huge clouds that are typically associated with vaping. A high VG liquid will typically come in bigger bottles at low prices, making them appeal to vapers, even if it’s not the best choice for their device.

A VG50/PG50 ratio bring vapers the best of both worlds. Decent clouds, incredible flavour, and juice that can be used in the majority of vape devices, pod or sub-ohm.

Why Not Use High VG Liquid in a Pod?

High VG liquid and a pod aren’t the best match, but there’s a few exceptions to the rule. High VG liquids are thick and need to be heated at higher temperatures. This means that the tiny little coils in your pod and low wattage have a difficult time absorbing the juice, unable to provide the adequate power. This leads to burnt coils, dry hits, and a poor experience all around. High PG or a 50/50 ratio creates a liquid lower in viscosity, allowing the smaller coils in the pod to soak it up.

As your high VG liquids burn through the pod coils, they’ll be burning through your wallet too. Using nicotine salts and lower VG E-juice allows you to get the maximum like out of your pod.

Because high VG juices are designed for sub-ohm vaping, if your pod has a coil below 1.0Ω, it has the capability to wick thicker liquids. Devices like the Calibrun A2 (0.9Ω Pod) can take suit most E-liquids—even high VG ones—but we recommend keeping the ratio realistic, don’t be hitting max VG liquids from your pod vape.

The Powerful Pods

As we’ve said, there are exceptions to the rules, and this includes devices such as the Uppor Value Vape Mod (0.8Ω or 0.5Ω) or Vaporesso Luxe (0.8Ω or 0.6Ω). These devices are designed to be the pod systems, preferred by ex-smokers around the world, but with the power of larger mods for the cloud chasers. Unlike the Caliburn A2, these devices are designed specifically for high VG liquids, giving you more freedom in choosing your ratio.

Find the Right Features

When you’re looking to purchase a new vape, it’s crucial to know how to use it properly. You always need to do the research—think about your habits and what you want out of your device. Do you want the tight draw, comparable to smoking, or the DTL clouds of high VG juices and powerful mods? There’s the perfect device out there for every vaper, it just takes finding what delivers the experience you want, at the price you can afford. If you want a pod device with the sub-ohm vaping experience, we recommend keeping an eye out for pod devices that have a pod or coil lower than 1.0Ω, or sticking to VG50/PG50 ratio E-liquids in any pod to get the best of both vaping experiences.
