Sub-Ohm Vaping: Everything You Ever Needed to Know

Sub-ohm vaping is taking off, but do you know what you need to join the club? Aside from all the kit you need to sub-ohm vape in NZ, we here at NZVAPOR have the know-how to match. Continue reading below to learn the basics of sub-ohm vaping.

What is sub-ohm vaping?

Simply put, sub-ohm vaping uses a vape mod or e-cigarette equipped with a coil that has a resistance level of less than one ohm (1 Ω).

This practice is largely based on Ohm’s law, one of the key scientific phenomena at the heart of vaping. Named after German physicist Georg Ohm, Ohm’s law states that electrical current passing through a conductor is directly proportional to the supplied voltage and indirectly proportional to the conductor’s resistance. In other words, a conductor with a lower resistance allows more current to pass through it.

When vaping, the vape coil is the conductor, and these come at a variety of resistance levels. Lower resistance coils heat faster because they allow more current to pass through them. This results in much thicker clouds and more robust flavours, which is why so many vapers are attracted to sub-ohm vaping.

Sub-ohm vaping is named for the coils that make it possible. Sub-ohm coils have a resistance of less than 1 ohm. This works because reducing resistance is easier than generating higher wattage. That coil, combined with a battery capable of producing sufficient wattage and a tank that can withstand the extra heat, makes for a very fulfilling and enjoyable vape experience.

Tips for great sub-ohm vaping

Sub-ohm vaping requires a functional understanding of the science of electrical currents, so keep in mind that there are safety concerns when optimising your kit for sub-ohm vaping. If you want to venture into sub-ohm vaping, keep the following tips in mind:

  1. Stick to a regulated mod if you’re new to sub-ohm vaping. A regulated box mod is the surest way to enjoy sub-ohm vaping safely. When you’re familiar with the anatomy of your vape mod and understand the ins and outs of wattage, voltage, and resistance, you can consider graduating to a more customised mechanical mod and kitting it with the best vape tank, battery, and coils you can find.
  2. Ensure your battery has a high amp rating. The lower resistance of your coil won’t matter if you don’t have a battery that can safely push through the additional wattage necessary to produce those massive hits. Ideally, you’ll want a mod with a ceiling of at least 40 watts. 18650 batteries are the most popular option for sub-ohm vaping.
  3. Resistance applies to your vapour as well. Consider a tip with a wider air hole to allow all that extra vapour through.
  4. Your vape juice ration should tilt heavily toward VG. Higher VG ratios translate to higher clouds, so the extra vegetable glycerine can act as a bit of nitrous boost for your sub-ohm kit!
  5. The extra vapour intake means you’re getting more nicotine, too. Consider specialised sub-ohm salts, which balance your heavier intake with a lighter nicotine concentration.
  6. Don’t go it alone. Plenty of people in the vaping community are happy to help you get started! Check online forums and visit vaping expos for some insider advice or speak to the team at NZVAPOR for guidance.
