Righting the Ratio: Getting Your PG/VG Balance Just Right

When thinking about what makes a satisfying vape, it might be flavour or nicotine levels that first comes to mind. While these are important factors, what can really make or break your vaping experience is the liquid base. More specifically, the PG to VG levels in the base. Understanding these ingredients and how they work is so important, just tweaking the ratio a small amount can take your vape from meh to amazing!

Let’s dive in to find out if there is a specific ratio most e-liquid in NZ use, and find the formula that will change the game for you.

The Run Down on PG and VG

Liquid base is the solution that carries both the nicotine and flavour, allowing these components to be vaporised. The base is made up of Propylene Glycol (PG) and Vegetable Glycerin (VG), with different formulas having different concentrations of each. While many e-juice products have a 50/50 ratio, there is no one ideal formula. The difference in consistency, with PG being thinner and VG being more viscous, is what makes a big impact on the factors below.

Throat Hit

If you’re transitioning from cigarettes to vaping, then PG is your friend. A high PG ratio gives a stronger throat hit, which makes it feel more like smoking. VG, being a thicker density, gives a very smooth feel on the throat, which might be nice to gradually move towards.
It’s important to note that some people find PG-heavy e-juice too rough and irritating, so test it out and see how it feels for you.

Strong Flavour

Want that menthol flavour to come in strong? High PG liquid has a slight advantage in terms of carrying flavour, as it is a very neutral liquid itself. VG, on the other hand, has a slightly sweet taste, which is only noticeable under close comparison. Still, if you’re a flavour connoisseur, then it’s good to know you will get a crisper and stronger taste with a PG-heavy base.

Cloud Size

This might be the most decisive factor. Do you like to fly under the radar with thin, mist-like puffs, or enjoy the art of blowing a thick monster of a cloud? A base high in VG will give much bigger clouds, as the density of the liquid means more vapour production. This is something to keep in mind if you want to improve your cloud blowing skills!

The Right Ratio for the Right Device

The type of vape device you’re using is also an important consideration when deciding on your ratio. PG-heavy e-juices work best with pens and pods, as they have smaller coils which can get clogged with a dense VG base. If you do want to go with a high VG option, it’s best to use a sub-ohm tank or a mod. These are built to handle the thick liquid, meaning no chance of any nasty dry hits!
