Smoking vs Vaping – a cost comparison

Of all the myriad reasons to quit smoking – and we’ve already outlined several – one key reason is that smoking is getting increasingly more expensive. If you aren’t ready to quit for the health of your body, perhaps you might consider quitting for the health of your wallet.

Perhaps you’ve heard that vaping is cheaper than smoking, and you’re a bit skeptical. After all, vaping requires a new contraption (the vape kit) and refills of e-juice. Surely that’s going to be more expensive than cigarettes?

We take a look at the cost of vaping vs smoking, and give you the final answer on what will give you more money in your pocket at the end of the month.

How much a smoker spends on cigarettes

Of course, the amount you spend will depend on the number of cigarettes you smoke and the type of cigarettes you prefer. Smokefree NZ has some general statistics on the cost of smoking. According to their research, if you’re smoking a packet a day, you’re spending around $177 a week, or $9,200 every year.

Or, put another way, if you earn an average wage of around $25 per hour in New Zealand, you’d have to work for 45 minutes just to afford your daily pack.

The cost of vaping

Again, this depends on the amount you vape and the type of e-cigarette and e-juice you choose. There’s very little information out there that quantifies what one pack of cigarettes per day equals in vaping.

Vape Emporium (UK) and E-Cigarette Reviewed (US) both attempted to conduct comparisons, using different types of e-cigs and different volumes of e-juice. By our own calculations, each bottle of vape juice is equivalent to 10-15 packs of cigarettes.

If you’re vaping the same amount of e-juice as you smoke cigarettes (puff for puff), then you’ll be spending approximately $50-75 a month on e-juice, or $600-$900 a year. That’s less than 10% of the cost of the equivalent amount of cigarettes.

Of course, you’ll need to buy an e-cig, too. We offer a wide range of e-cigs and starter kits to suit all budgets. Even our more high-end e-cigarettes will set you back less than $150, and this is a one-time cost. This still puts vaping on top!

So what do you think, $9,200 or $900? Think of what you could be doing with that extra money – going on a holiday, saving for a home, swimming in a bathtub filled with chocolate … the possibilities are endless with vaping.

At NZVAPOR we stock a range of e-cigs and e-juices for you to choose from, so you can experiment and find the perfect mix and flavour for you.
